How To Prevent Bad Guys Copy Pasting Content From Your WordPress Blog?

You work hard writing unique posts on your WordPress blog, but in this huge world, there are people who do not want to do so. You may feel very disappointed the other day when you see somebody else has simply copy-pasted your content on his/her website and published it, without your consent.

Apart from the automated content scrapping, most of the time, these guys are non-serious bloggers, who enter into the world of blogging just to make some quick bucks without making efforts. These guys also can be newbie bloggers, who are always in a hurry of content creation and unaware of words like plagiarism, copyright, etc.

Whoever the culprit, but content theft is a real problem in today’s cyber world. It’s really painful to see our hard work copy-pasted on some other’s site/blog. However, you may take action against such people, ask him/them to remove the content, or simply file a DMCA complaint, but this practice adds-up some extra work in your routine.

So, is there anything you can do on your part to stop such bad guys from stealing your content? Yes, there is. Not foolproof but you can make it a bit harder to steal the content.

Here’s How to Prevent Copy-Pasting Content from Your WordPress Blog

Actually what we are going to discuss in this post is to prevent text selection on your WordPress blog, so that nobody can simply copy-paste your content. However, the methods we will discuss here, may not protect your content from highly skilled tech-savvy persons, but still, it will not be easy for people having average knowledge.

So, let’s discuss how we can prevent text selection on our WordPress blog. The goal can be achieved by adding some custom CSS code to your stylesheet file. Alternatively, you can use a WordPress plugin, if you are not comfortable with editing theme files.

We’ll discuss the custom CSS method first. To do this, login to your WordPress admin panel and open the theme customizer by clicking on the Appearance >> Customize in the left panel.

Open customizer in WordPress

In the theme customizer, you should see an option named Additional CSS in the left panel menu.

Additional CSS in WordPress

Once you click on Additional CSS, you will be presented with a box to add Custom CSS code.  In this box, simply copy-paste the following CSS code:

* {
-webkit-touch-callout: none; /* iOS Safari */
-webkit-user-select: none; /* Safari */
-khtml-user-select: none; /* Konqueror HTML */
-moz-user-select: none; /* Old versions of Firefox */
-ms-user-select: none; /* Internet Explorer/Edge */
user-select: none; /* Non-prefixed version, currently supported by Chrome, Opera and Firefox */

After copy-pasting the code, click on Publish to save it.

Now open your blog in a new window and try selecting some text. You should not be able to select it. What happened here by adding the above-given custom CSS code is, it made the whole text un-selectable across your blog.

Alternate Method: Using a WordPress Plugin

Another method you can use to prevent the copy-pasting of your content is, installing a WordPress plugin. You can install WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click plugin.

Copy protection plugin

The process of installing this plugin is straightforward, just like any other plugin. In your WordPress admin panel go to Plugins >> Add New and search for the WP Content Copy Protection plugin. Once you find the right plugin, install and activate it. Upon activation, this plugin will protect your content from being copied by disabling text selection and right click across your blog.
